BCCI and Rohit Sharma Unveil Mukesh Kumar's Test Debut in 2nd Test Against West Indies Due to Shardul's Injury

Mukesh Kumar is a right-arm pacer from Bengal, India, who made his Test debut in the second match against West Indies at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad. He replaced Shardul Thakur, who was unavailable for selection due to a sore left groin. Mukesh had previously been part of the Indian Test side but had not played a game until this match, making it a crucial opportunity for him to showcase his skills before India’s next assignment against South Africa.

In his domestic cricket career, Mukesh has played 39 first-class matches and has taken 149 wickets at an impressive average of 21.55. He played a vital role in taking Bengal to two Ranji Trophy finals in the last three seasons. Additionally, he represented India A and impressed with five-wicket hauls against New Zealand A and Bangladesh A, taking 18 wickets at an average of 17.50.

Mukesh Kumar also made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for the Delhi Capitals in 2023, where he played 10 matches and picked up 7 wickets. He is known for his hard work and consistency in domestic cricket, being a workhorse who can bowl consistently in tough conditions.

In the same Test match, there was another debutant, spin-bowling all-rounder Kirk McKenzie, who was handed his Test cap for the West Indies team.

This Test match between India and West Indies is also historic, being the 100th Test match between the two cricket nations. Furthermore, it marks the 500th international match for Indian cricket star Virat Kohli. The occasion was celebrated with felicitations for the captains and players of both teams.

India’s head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma both acknowledged the significance of the rivalry and its special place in cricket history, with Dravid expressing gratitude for the passionate fans and Sharma hoping to continue the legacy of former players in the India-West Indies cricket rivalry.
