Suryakumar Yadav's Candid Admission About His ODI Performance

Suryakumar Yadav emerged as the hero for the Indian team as they bounced back to beat West Indies in the third T20I after losing the first two matches. Suryakumar’s impressive performance with the bat, scoring 83 runs off 44 balls, played a crucial role in India’s victory. He addressed the media in a post-match press conference where he discussed his form in the One Day International (ODI) format.

Suryakumar acknowledged that his ODI numbers have not been impressive and stated that he has no shame in admitting that fact. He emphasized the importance of honesty and improvement, mentioning that Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid advised him to play the ODI format more and consider how he can contribute to the team, especially in the latter stages of the innings.

Known for his high-risk, innovative batting style, Suryakumar has found great success in T20Is. He has scored 1,780 runs in 51 T20Is at an average of 45.64 and a strike rate of 174.33, including three centuries and 14 fifties. He was recognized as the ‘ICC T20I Player of the Year’ in 2022 and is ranked as the number 1 batter in this format worldwide.

However, Suryakumar’s performance in ODIs hasn’t been as strong. In 26 ODIs, he has scored 511 runs at an average of 24.33, with only two half-centuries. Interestingly, he had a promising start in ODI cricket, scoring 261 runs in his first six innings at an average of 65.25 with two half-centuries. But his form declined afterward, managing just 250 runs in the subsequent 18 innings at an average of 14.70, including three consecutive golden ducks against Australia.

Suryakumar admitted that he is more accustomed to the T20I style of batting due to the team’s frequent participation in T20 matches. He finds the 50-over format more challenging, requiring a different approach based on the situation. He mentioned that in ODIs, he aims to adapt his game based on the match’s tempo, ensuring he contributes effectively.

Regarding his recent match-winning knock, Suryakumar stated that he approached the innings in the same way he has been batting for India over the past two years, emphasizing self-expression and playing his natural game.

When asked about missing out on a potential century, Suryakumar mentioned that he doesn’t place too much emphasis on personal milestones.

Suryakumar also praised Tilak Varma’s batting performance in the series, noting his maturity and mental strength at a young age.

With this victory, India managed to keep the series alive at 2-1, with two more matches to be played.
